Where there are so many options these days on ways to publish your book, there are so many good reasons why the self-publishing route is still one of the most favoured one.
When you choose to self-publish you have more choice in choosing the selling price of your book and you are in control of your own finances, from the start you can set a reasonable budget to produce your book and aim to work towards this figure – how do you do that? Simple, some of the decisions you make when designing the book can make a big difference to the cost of creating it. It is worth asking questions on what can be done differently to bring the cost down, especially if you are going to be using a publisher for this process, they will know how to help you with this.
Selling your book
It is important that you know and have worked out what a sensible selling price for your book should be., you do need to make your money back and some profit, otherwise what would be the point in publishing in the first price.
To sell your book, you do need to be creative, there are so many books out there to choose from. By just placing your book on a site that sells books, isn’t necessarily going to be enough, you need to be a part of the selling process, you will need to go out and do events, maybe even start with a book launch when your book is first published. You will also need to advertise your book and shout from the roof tops all about it as soon as you have available the front cover design.
This process can be hard work, but very rewarding, the more networking and events you do then more doors can begin to open to more opportunities.
Want to write a book, but don’t know where to start?
They say everyone has a book in them, this may be more accurate than you think, there are many reasons why people decide to write and it doesn’t always mean they have written a fictional novel or children’s book, It could be a life changing event, or you may be researching your family’s history and want to preserve this in the form of a book, that can be shared with your family and passed down the generations, or you may have some interesting history that could be of interest to others.
You may want to share your expertise in something like your profession or business, no one will know your business more than you and you may have a skill that you can write about that maybe beneficial to other likeminded businesses, or people just starting out in your profession.
Children’s stories are quite popular with parents it maybe you have written for your own children and you want to create something that can be passed down to grandchildren as keep sakes.
Whatever your chosen genre, it is advisable to research and make enquiries and read the small print when it comes to deciding which publishing route to go down.
One of the things to consider when you are self-publishing, are the illustrations and who is going to create them. It is important that you choose an illustrator you can work with and someone who understands the age group your book is aimed at and the characters themselves, you want an illustrator who can bring your characters to life.
An illustrator will produce the work using the right software and files, that works for the printers, who are printing your book, they may also be able to create your book cover, should that be their forte, as this is quite a specialist area. The book cover needs to stand out and be interesting enough to grab the reader’s attention, as a poor cover can affect the sales of the book.
Whoever produces the book cover, needs to understand how to create it, as it will need to be a specific size and may have a spine, if it is to be perfect bound. Choosing someone who understands this process, will help with the smooth running of the publication of your book. By not using someone who knows what they are doing, this could be costly, if you can’t use the cover for whatever reason, you may need to pay someone else to create you another one.
All of this may sound quite daunting, but it doesn’t have to be, if you choose to self- publish through a publisher, they can take this worry away from you and the only decisions you will have to make, will be which design to choose.
If you are considering publishing a book and it’s your first time, don’t be afraid to a ask questions, as it is important you fully understand what you are entering in to. It would be well worth listing your questions, prior to a conversation taking place, so you feel fully secure in what is involved.
